Why do cookies in Japan have images on them?

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was smiling at me. No, not how you may imagine. Her face was printed on a cookie that a colleague had just left on my desk.

It was shortly after she had taken office. I had seen all kinds of decorated cookies before: cute pandas, flowers, anime characters. But a politician? That was a first.

In Japan, cookies aren’t just made to taste good. They are also made to look cute. Beautiful and memorable. Adorned with characters, animals, mascots or even politicians, they feel immediately more personal and special.

It fits well with Japan’s culture of gift giving. Even small presents show thought and consideration. A box of cookies with personality is often the perfect gift.

I’ve even seen cookies that say sorry. With apologetic faces, sad eyes and little downturned mouths. Maybe not surprising in a country where communication can be quite indirect. So, a cookie can say more than words.

In Western countries, we also have custom cakes with photos, logos, or messages printed on the icing. But usually they’re more tied to special occasions like weddings, birthdays or corporate events.

What makes Japan stand out is how widespread and everyday it is. Cookies with cute images are part of ordinary snack culture.

You can find them in supermarkets, train stations and souvenir shops, featuring famous landmarks like Mount Fuji, or seasonal designs like cherry blossoms or autumn leaves.

I recently brought cookies with Pokémon images to a six-year old. He was nothing but delighted!

Japan’s appreciation for aesthetics and attention for detail certainly helps explain the appeal. Craftsmanship is everywhere. Cookies are no exception.

Affordable edible-printing technology has helped make image-printed cookies a mainstream. The quality of the prints can be striking.

Commercial collaborations have further fueled the trend. You can get cookies featuring branded anime characters, tourist attractions and sports teams. Many are limited-edition collectibles.

Ultimately, it’s all about making everyday treats feel a little more special and bring a smile of people’s face.

So, if you need to say sorry, or want to have friends guess where your last travel was, just let the cookies do the talking.

Did you know:

  • Some cookies feature bears, cats, or dogs that are almost cute…but not quite. Crossed eyes, awkward smiles, or wonky expressions make them even more charming.
  • Some cookies printed with images of sushi, ramen, or steak—so you’re eating a cookie that looks like a completely different food. Fun and surprise!
  • Some companies use custom cookies as business cards or promotional giveaways. Instead of getting a paper card, you may walk away with a sweet memory.
